And then he walked along the edge of the Circle

This is the place where we will post your stories about the Green's Playhouse, The Glasgow Apollo and Satelitte City (The Wee Apollo). As it develops we will break the stories up into sections such as Myths, Gigs I missed, Meeting the Bands, Where are they now etc. No story too trivial and we will only edit out bad language!

New Forum structure on Apollomemories soon.

Comments on Deep Purple [reply]

Deep purple was my first Apollo gig in 1976. They had the reputation as being the loudest band in the world around that time and they certainly lived up to that expectation. Reports were that they played at almost 120 decibels. I had never heard anything like it and the sheer volume blew me away. I reckon it was the first tour without Ritchie Blackmore and the crowd continually heckled any attempts at recreating his solos. Not really that memorable except for my "first time" at the Apollo. Jim, I'm glad you enjoyed this gig as your "first" Apollo experience. For me it was total s***e.
On reflection I have to put Tommy Bolin's performance to his (now) well known drug problems, but David Coverdale couldnae sing at all! I remeber Glen Hughes taking over most of the vocals and the whole thing just went on with solo after solo after solo.....z.z.z.z.z
I read somewhere that this may have been Purple's last ever UK gig. Any truth in that?

Thankfully the Dio-Powell-Blackmore Rainbow appeared soon after.

A complete disaster, from the word go,the only positives were Jon Lord and Ian Paice who pushed to save the night. If I mind right Purple as was, knew that it was finished that night, but had one more gig in Liverpool to go ... may be wrong ... Rainbow were great, an so was Coverdale when he came with Whitesnake later. [reply]

Les,

Kind of feel the same as you, although TOMMY BOLIN couldn't do anything right that night. He seemed  ******ed what ever he played. But yeah.. looking back it was really pretty bad for a PURPLE gig.

I believe LIVERPOOL was the last one.Apparently IAN PAICE turned to JON LORD and said " that's it !"
JON LORD was about to say the same thing.Always remember JON LORD saying that he felt that this version of PURPLE nearly un-done all the classic 'highs' that the old band had worked some hard to achieve.

And yes thankfully RITCHIE-COZY-and RONNIE had been working hard creating RAINBOW.

But that's another story.

Will post my other fav memory of the 74 PURPLE gig later.Tad long...but brought back alot of great memories, and may hopefully bring back some to the many who also attended. And... who may I add may see it in a totally different view.

Would love to hear from anybody either way.

The 74 set list on the site is well wrong. They clearly would not have played anything from CTTB!
The 74 gigs were superb. Blackmore and Paice particularly.Saw the 76 tour at Wembley and I walked out. That was not DP.

The early 70's gigs were the best I have ever seen. I was only 14/15 and me and my mates had front row seats for those gigs...I remember Ian Gillan playing some bongos (or are they big tom toms?) and then shoving them off the stage...a fight ensued with people trying to grab them and keep them..I wonder if anyone managed to sneak one out of the gig. Ritchie Blackmore was at his best then...and I especially remember the gig where they covered most of the MADE IN JAPAN stuff..(I dont think Made in Japan had come out by them so I was chuffed when it came out and was near enough identical to the gig they had done in the Apollo)..

I can only imagine what Deep Purple and Rainbow would have been like at the Glasgow Apollo they would have been fantastic.

If anyone can possibly post any photos of Rainbow or Deep Puprle at the Glasgow the pics would be greatly appreciated,  thanks.

21/4/74 Purple with new singer Coverdale were awesome.I remember the performance the roadies had getting Elf's grand piano offstage. Also remember Jon Lord (I think), pouring a bottle of beer over Blackmore's guitar while he was playing it and the sparks which came from it ! [reply]

Friday 5 March 1971 was my first real rock concert. I was 17 and so naive I wore my new suit! What a diddy.
The concert blew my mind and so many years later still rates as one of my best ever. I saw the Stones the following Monday and at the end of that loads of people were shouting for Purple. They were that good.
